Mindfulness Attitudes

Attitude Number Three: Beginner’s Mind

Embracing the attitude of a “beginner’s mind” can be a very powerful way of helping us wake up to the present moment. This holds true not only for formal meditative practices, but also in our everyday lives. We tend to view things, events, and people with our pre-conceived expectations because of past experiences. If we can approach all these moments with a beginner’s mind, or, in other words, approaching this moment as if it is our very first time, what might change? When we describe life as “Groundhog Day,” we’re not waking up to the fact that no one moment is like any other. What are we missing when we approach life in this way? What have we missed? Try experimenting with this as you go through your day: this is your first sunrise, your first cup of coffee, your first shower. What do you notice? When you’re walking, look up and take in the beauty around you, as if this is the first time you’ve ever taken this route. What moments do you want to embrace today?
