Mindfulness Attitudes
Attitude Number Four: Trust
We, as a society, have become saturated with people wanting to give us advice just about anything. We listen to podcasts, Ted talks, social media and influencers, all telling us they have the answers to our problems. They are the experts. And, of course, expertise is so important. But in the current climate of trying to be the best we can be, we’ve stopped trusting ourselves.
An attitude of trust will be necessary when you begin mindfulness practice because often you’ll be surprised with what comes up, especially in the mindful movement practices. When asked to do a certain move, it’s important to trust and listen to what your body is telling you. What seems like a simple move for one, can be difficult and painful for another. Also, when others may be exclaiming about the benefits of their practice and you’re only feeling frustration, trust will be huge in those moments. Being with a difficult emotion and trusting yourself that this is where you need to be is all part of the mindfulness practice. Being with a difficult thought or emotion is the same as being with a feeling of calm or relaxation because it is what YOU are experiencing in the moment. That’s practicing mindfulness too!
