Mindfulness Attitudes
Attitude Number Five: Non-Striving
The attitude of non-striving is a difficult one especially if you reside in the United States. We are constantly on the move, and if we’re not, we feel a tremendous amount of guilt. The truly beautiful part of practicing mindfulness is that you can give up the urge to “do” and instead just “be.”
In other words we stop working so hard and we let go—we let go of the need to be in a certain state, we let go of trying to stop our mind from wandering, we let go of the feeling we should be more advanced with meditating than we are—this non-striving and letting go can actually lead us to the very things we want. It’s paradoxical, for sure, but if you strive for those things, they will elude you. If you cultivate an attitude of non-striving, you’ll be surprised at what happens.
